| Lubricating the Flap Cables | |||
|
1) Disconnect the flap cables from the motor and thread on the
grease adapter tool. 2) Remove actuators from wings. 3) Detach actuators from cables. Allow cables to dangle free in wheel wells. 4) The spiral wound core can be pulled out from the actuator end. From the wheel wells, pull the cable cores all the way out for inspection and cleaning. Then push them back in leaving about 20” hanging out and pump in grease until it just starts to get pushed out again then stop. That will be about the right amount of grease. You don't want to completely fill the housing with grease since the core will displace most of it when it's pushed back in. |

5) Chuck the cable end onto a drill and spin it as you work the
cable in and out several times pushing it in a little farther with
each stroke to draw grease all the way to the end of the core. As
you do this you will see more and more grease drawn down the spiral
winding of the core until it is evenly distributed the entire way.
Once grease is visible all the way to the end of the core, detach
the drill, reattach the actuators and reinstall. NOTE: This tool and process works with the newer flex housings with the removeable cores that as best as I can tell were used starting around 1970 but the IPC is unclear on exactly when the change was made. The older cable housing was a metal spiral wound type and the core is not removable. This tool might still work on those type of cables by injecting grease with the core in place but I haven’t yet heard back from anyone that’s tried it. It has been suggested that grease would need to be thinned so that it could be injected past the non-removable core. IMPORTANT: Most planes will have the transmitter for the flap indicator mounted on the LH actuator. A little-known tidbit of Beechcraft knowledge is that the forward ADEL clamp is special in that it has a section of the rubber cut out so that it does not cover the vent hole on the actuator housing. Be sure that the forward clamp you put back has some sort of relief so that it does not block the vent hole. |
